Jewelry Care

Our jewelry can last a lifetime, but it requires care to keep it in top condition. Here are some tips that may be helpful: The best way to stop tarnish buildup. But if you have multiple pieces, like most of us, you can't wear them all every day. Here's a simple solution to care for your pieces when you're not wearing them. Store your jewelry in an airtight bag between uses to prevent tarnish buildup. Tarnish is a natural phenomenon that occurs when jewelry is exposed to air. This is one of the hallmarks of metals. If you notice tarnish, the first step in cleaning your jewelry is to use soap and water (liquid soap like you would use to wash your hands) and a soft cloth. Lather your hands with soap and water and then gently wash your jewelry. Then, using the soft cloth, dry your jewelry and let it air dry a bit before placing it back in the airtight bag. Cleaning your jewelry this way will not damage it as long as it is not exposed to prolonged pressure. A gentle wash and dry is the first and safest way to keep your jewelry looking beautiful. Everything needs a bath, and your jewelry is not excluded from that rule. If you are unable to remove the tarnish with the suggested gentle wash, the next step is to use a chemically treated cloth. We do not recommend using dipping solutions as some can permanently discolor your jewelry. Tarnish can easily be removed with a polishing cloth. We sell polishing cloths because we believe it is a quick and easy way to keep your pieces looking their best. Here are a few things we recommend: Avoid exposing your jewelry to all household chemicals, including but not limited to bleach or ammonia.

Do not allow your jewelry to come into contact with items containing sulfur, such as latex gloves, rubber bands, wool, and items containing elastic. Additionally, several foods can cause silver to tarnish more quickly; some examples are eggs, onions, olives, vinegar, salad dressings, salt, and fruit juices. Be sure to wash your hands after handling these items. Also, remove your jewelry before washing dishes, swimming, bathing, or showering. Be sure to apply makeup, hairspray, lotion, and perfume before putting on sterling silver jewelry, and never sleep with it on. Makeup, perfumes, and lotions can damage your jewelry. Make it a rule when dressing: put your jewelry on last before leaving the house and take it off first when you return. If you take care of your jewelry, you can enjoy it for a lifetime!
